Law castle

Blackshaw hill circuit

Distance 5km climb 100m, graded moderate
and indicated by red triangles on the map.

Leave the station car park at the south corner up a set of steps, go left steeply uphill passing restored Law castle, continue round the farm, behind the farm at a sharp bend leave the tarmac road straight on (left) onto a track going slightly downhill.
Follow the track over a stile (100m) continue along the track which bends right and goes uphill with the fence on the left.
Keep to the track, there are three gates each about 300m apart after which you will be walking with Blackshaw hill on your left, pass a ruin to your right, and a cup and ring marked rock in the field to your left.
The track goes sharp left over a cattle grid, in 250m is another cattle grid, at this go left off the main track passing a quarry to your left up to the corner of the field, cross the stile into the planted area where there is a faint quad track, follow it left contouing round the hill along the edge of the plantation and with great views to the Cumbraes .
Eventually you will have gone full circle around Blackshaw hill and should return the way you came but this time with the wonderfull view directly in front of you.
If you choose you can ascend Blackshaw hill by the steep western slope to enjoy the 360 degree view from the summit, you may also choose to ascend Law hill on the return and enjoy the even more impressive view from that summit returning down the obvious track from the mast and right at the road back to the town.
