Beach and Peninsula 10 km, needs confidence on rough ground

Leave the rail station car park by the left exit down Main street, in 100m go left through the iron arch into the Glen, go through the park past the football ground going right across the burn and left along the path through the trees to the end of the Glengo right as you emerge from the Glen 50m then left down the tarmac road to the main road. Go right and in 150 left down past the golf course to the beach track. Go to the right along the beach with wonderfull views across to Arran and along the beach toward Fort Hill.
If the tide is low you may be lucky enough to see seals on the rocks offshore and along the shoreline is great for bird spotting if you are early. The beach track ends at Ardneil go out to the road and left to Portencross with its pretty harbour, castle and pier, continue along the track which can be muddy, to the power station road. Follow this road along beside the beach with a good chance of sighting some birdlife to the Sustrans track, turn right along this track through Hunterston estate passing the old Castle on route follow the cycle route crossing the main road to go back to West Kilbride on the B782.

An alternative return to the B782 is to follow the cycleway down tthough Thirdpart and return on the B7048 or back along the beach.
