Portencross Castle

Hunterston peninsula

Distance 15km climb 150m graded moderate with alternatives shown by blue squares on the route map however the description below is I believe the best option for the route.

Leave the station car park by the left exit down Main street, in 100m go left through the iron arch into the Glen, go through the park past the football park going right across the burn and left along the path through the trees to the end of the Glen then downhill to the main ardrossan road, cross left past the old mill and onto the beach, go right along the beach with wonderfull views across to Arran and along the beach to Fort Hill.
If the tide is low you may be lucky enough to see seals on the rocks offshore and along the shoreline if you are early there are many birds to be seen.
Leave the beach at the end of the golf cousre turn left along the road to Portencross castle and harbour a lovely spot to take a little break and some photograghs.
Continue on along the shoreline below the cliffs onto the road, in summer many wild flowers will be seen along this short section of track and roadside.
Pass the power stations on your right, watch the shoreline it is a mavelous place to observe many species of bird, the views out to the Cumbraes is also very nice.
Keep along the shore path, as the path leaves the shore behind turn right along the cycleway track into Hunterston estate pass Hunterston castle and in 300m turn right toward Campbelton and Goldenberry farms.
In 300m go straight at a crossroads toward Goldenberry Cottage, in just under half a kilometre ignore the rough track straight ahead, the road bends right and rises to a line of trees on the left.
Immediately beyond the trees on the left go through the gate and ascend Goldenberry hill on a good track, resting at the summit to admire the beautifull 360 degree view.
When leaving the summit go through the gate beside the trig point and descend Goldenberry on the good track back to the beach.
Follow the road (B7048) back to West Kilbride, straight on to the roundabout and taking St Brides Rd back to the station.
