Leave Wallace’s cave behind and after 250m there is a slightly overgrown path to the right this
leads to a bridge giving a good view of a minor but deep gorge over a steam running into Lugar
water.
Beyond the bridge the track is muddy with a bypass to the right up to the edge of a field and
then curving left on a good track by the field edge. This path joins a rough cart track in 200m
follow this left. Auchinleck house is visible across the field uphill to the left.
The track continues beside the field to a tee junction, on the right is old farm buildings still partly
in use for storage. The track right is the route to the big house.
Pass a boarded up house on the left and the farmyard on the right to a gate just beyond the
abandoned house. This is the way into the front of Auchinleck house. Go through the gate,
taking the right fork after which the track bends left beside rhododendrons to the front of
Auchinleck house.
The house is empty most of the time with only a caretaker in residence.

The way ahead leads past the house and down to a pretty bridge over a stream and gorge and
on through the estate to a fork in the track. The left fork leads back toward Wallace’s cave so
go right 500m until the track crosses a tarmac road. Continue straight ahead 500m past High
Clews, below a railway keeping right at the a minor tarmac road. The minor road bends right
sharply after about 300m and the route is left beside a metal gate blocking the old road downhill
to the old road bridge over the river Ayr. The massive reinforced concrete road bridge can be
seen (and heard) from here. A further short stroll along this road leads back to the start point
and the car.
